4P1L Tube Amplifier – Sophisticated SE Class A Stereo Amplifier

4P1L is an exquisite SE (Single Ended) Class A stereo tube amplifier crafted in Latvia, combining top-tier audio technologies with meticulous artisan craftsmanship. Built using point-to-point wiring (hand-wired) technology, it offers precise sound reproduction and a unique visual aesthetic.

Construction:

Chassis:

  • Crafted from solid oak and plywood, ensuring excellent durability, acoustic stability, and an attractive design.
  • Metal accents add elegance and robustness to the structure.

Tubes:

  • Power Stage: Two 4П1Л tubes, known for their warm, natural sound and minimal harmonic distortion. The 4П1Л (4P1L) is a directly heated power pentode developed during the Soviet era, designed for use in both radio frequency (RF) and low frequency (LF) amplification circuits. Belonging to the military and professional electronics tube family, it has gained significant popularity among audio enthusiasts today. The 4П1Л was manufactured in the Soviet Union from the 1950s until the late 1980s across various factories, including the renowned Svetlana plant in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). The tube was intended for military and communications equipment where battery-powered operation was required. Historically, the 4П1Л is considered the successor or Soviet version of the German wartime RL2 and 4P6 tube design, adapted for USSR military needs.
  • Preamp Stage: Two EF86 (Tungsram) low-noise, high-gain pentodes. The EF86 was specifically designed for audio frequency signal amplification. Introduced in 1953 by the Philips/Mullard group, this tube type was later manufactured by several European companies, including the Hungarian company Tungsram. Tungsram EF86 tubes were primarily produced from the mid-1950s to the 1970s in Budapest, Hungary, earning a reputation as high-quality alternatives to tubes from Western European manufacturers. The EF86 was created as a specialized preamplifier tube for high-quality audio equipment. Unlike many other pentodes, it was engineered with particular attention to low noise and reduced microphonics. Its primary purpose was to amplify very weak audio signals in microphone preamplifiers, tape recorders, radio receivers, studio equipment, and Hi-Fi amplifiers.
  • Power Supply: One EZ81 (Tesla) rectifier tube (kenotron), which stabilizes voltage and ensures a clean, stable signal. The EZ81 is a full-wave vacuum rectifier tube (double anode rectifier) that became highly popular in Europe during the 1950s and 1960s. It was designed as a compact and reliable power supply component for radios, tape recorders, and tube audio amplifiers. Manufactured by the Czechoslovakian company Tesla, EZ81 tubes are highly valued today among vintage audio enthusiasts for their reliability and musical sound character. The EZ81 was developed by the Philips/Mullard group in the mid-1950s as part of the European Noval (B9A) miniaturized tube series. Tesla factories in Czechoslovakia began producing this tube in the late 1950s and continued for several decades, primarily at the Rožnov and other Tesla plants. Tesla tubes were widely used in Eastern European audio and radio equipment. The primary task of the EZ81 was converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) in the power supplies of tube equipment. The tube was designed for medium-power audio systems requiring a stable and relatively low-noise anode voltage supply. Its indirectly heated cathode helped significantly reduce background noise and AC hum.

Specifications:

  • Output Power: 2 x 1 W – ideal for high-sensitivity speakers and intimate listening experiences in small spaces.
  • Dimensions: Width 44 cm, Height 15 cm, Depth 40 cm.
  • Weight: 13 kg – lightweight enough for convenient placement but stable enough to minimize vibrations.

Sound Characteristics:

The 4P1L amplifier offers an exceptional Class A tube sound with rich tonality, gentle dynamics, and excellent detail.

The directly heated 4П1Л tubes provide an expressive midrange and a nuanced sound signature, particularly suited for acoustic music and vocals. Audiophile enthusiasts often describe the 4П1Л as one of the most interesting and underrated Soviet audio tubes. Its directly heated cathode design imparts a special character to the sound, typically found in much more expensive DHT (Directly Heated Triode) type tubes. The 4П1Л features very high detail, outstanding microdynamics, a clean and transparent midrange, precise instrument localization within the soundstage, smooth, natural high frequencies, and deep, well-controlled bass reproduction. Many builders note that the 4П1Л sound is unusually linear, maintaining a very low distortion level even without heavy negative feedback. In audio communities, it is often described as a "very clean and smooth" tube with rich micro-detail reproduction.

Meanwhile, the Tungsram EF86 is highly regarded for its musical and detailed sound. Compared to more common dual-triode tubes (such as the ECC83/12AX7), the EF86 provides higher voltage gain, excellent reproduction of fine details and microdynamics, a wide and open soundstage, distinct instrument separation, as well as natural and rich harmonics. Tungsram-manufactured EF86 tubes are characterized by a clear, neutral, and dynamic sound with good high-frequency resolution. Many audio enthusiasts describe them as slightly livelier and more energetic than some other European versions of the EF86.

Although rectifier tubes do not directly amplify the audio signal, they significantly influence the overall character of the amplifier. In the audio world, the EZ81 is highly valued for its smooth and musical voltage delivery. Compared to silicon diodes, vacuum rectifiers produce a slight voltage "sag" effect—a mild voltage drop under dynamic loads, which many listeners find musically pleasing. Tesla EZ81 tubes feature a warm and organic sound, fluid and musical dynamics, smoother high frequencies, a natural midrange, a reduced "harsh" sound effect compared to solid-state rectifiers, and low noise and hum levels. Audio enthusiasts often describe the Tesla EZ81 as slightly warmer and more musical than some later industrial production versions.

Combining the EF86 (Tungsram) in the input stage, the 4П1Л in the power amplification stage, and the EZ81 (Tesla) in the power supply results in a highly musical, detailed, and organic tube amplifier sound with a distinctly analog character. This configuration merges high detail, the naturalness of directly heated tubes, and the classic smoothness of a vacuum rectifier. This combination is geared more toward musical enjoyment and natural sound rather than analytical or overly sterile precision. It is exceptionally well-suited for jazz, vocal music, acoustic recordings, classical music, blues, and ambient genres.

Overall Impression:

The 4P1L is the perfect choice for audiophiles seeking an intimate, detailed, and warm listening experience, along with unique design and craftsmanship. This amplifier is a superb addition to any audio system, offering both outstanding sound and visual appeal.
